Richard van Noort
Professor Richard van Noort obtained a Bachelors Degree in Materials Science from the University of Sussex in 1972 and then stayed on to complete a DPhil in “Biomaterials in relation to prosthetic heart valves”, which he was awarded in 1976. He took up a postdoctoral position at the University of Sheffield, carrying on with research on prosthetic heart valves. In 1980 he moved across to the Dental School to become a lecturer in Dental Materials Science, eventually rising to the position of Professor in Dental Materials Science, a position he still holds. He has published over 200 papers and has written two text books. His contribution to the subject of dental materials was recognised when awarded the DSc (Sheffield) in 2008 and the John Tomes Medal for services to dentistry by the BDA in 2009. He is now semi-retired and his work is focused on developing new dental teaching aids and researching into the potential impact of 3D printing on dentistry.
